Crib mattresses can only be used by your baby for 1 year or two. After that, they can be moved to a bigger type of mattress that they can use during their childhood years. If you have had a crib mattress used by your first baby, that can still be reused by your next baby. What it needs is a bit of cleaning and sprucing up and you are good to go.
Step 1: If the mattress has been cooped up in a separate room or in an attic, chances are, various whatnots are already breeding in it. It is best to clean it in a spacious are where you can spruce it up properly.
Step 2: Vacuum the mattress first. This is to remove the unwanted dust, dust mites and some of the cobwebs that might have formed on it. You can also give it a little whack to further remove the dusts.
Step 3: Prepare cleaning solutions. The first cleaning solution you are going to use is the vinegar solution. Just mix one cup of white vinegar with one cup of water. Place it in a spray bottle and spray it on both sides of the mattress. Another method is to put the solution on a basin and just use cloth to absorb the solution. Wipe the mattress using the cloth. You might want to wear gloves before doing this as the vinegar can prune up your skin. Leave the solution there for an hour.
Step 4: After an hour, dampen another clean cloth with water and then wipe the mattress with it. This is to remove the smell and the remaining vinegar solution.
Step 5: Buy a pack of baking soda and sprinkle it on the mattress. Other than being a good stain remove, baking soda also has the natural ability to diffuse any unwanted smell. Leave it there for 30 minutes to get rid of vinegar smell further and to get rid of remaining bacteria in the mattress. Afterwards, vacuum the mattress again.
Step 6: Leave it under the warmth of the sun for half a day to further clean it out and to dry it completely. Afterwards, install the mattress on the crib. Put hypoallergenic mattress protectors and covers so your next baby can sleep on it with ease.
Wouldn't you like to save a few hundred bucks by cleaning your old crib bed rather than buying a new one?
