Baby Travel Crib - 7 Vital Tips to Check Before Buying

When you travel with your baby or toddler a portable baby travel crib will be a must. It will ensure your peace of mind as you know your child will be safe, see tip 5, and you know that the bed will always be fresh and clean. In this article I have put together a few ideas that, if followed, will ensure you have a good experience with your selected baby travel crib.

Tip 1.

Check the manufactures literature, also see if there are any online videos available, showing how the Crib is set up and folded. Written instructions can make the unfold appear so so easy but try putting the crib up in an unfamiliar room, single handed, with a screaming baby in one arm! Try to see if you can watch the fold as well, does it unlock and fold down smoothly or will you need to wrestle it into the packing?

Tip 2.

Check online literature and comments of customers who have already purchased, this way you will get the opinion of someone who has spent money on the particular product, not that of a practiced sales person who wants you to spend your dollars with them.

Tip 3.

Find out how much the closed package, ready to travel, weighs. This can vary anywhere between 10 to 30 pounds, doesn't sound much on its own, but add it to other luggage and it could be the back breaker, hopefully not literally! Be aware that the heaviest packs are not necessarily the most stable when open, see tip 5.

Tip 4.

Check if special sized sheets are needed, if so does the manufacturer make a special set, many do nowadays so be aware that this is something to look out for. Of course ordinary sheets can be folded, but its so much easier to have fitted bedding, after all you may well be traveling for pleasure, so why make life more difficult?

Tip 5.

Pay particular attention to users comments on stability, some that seem to be ideal cribs are meant for use outdoors as playpens, and may need staking to the ground to ensure stability, great in a field but you'll be unpopular in a hotel room, both with the owner and the guests downstairs!

Tip 6.

Select a crib that is easy to clean, can any non wipeable parts come off for washing? This may seem unimportant for your first child, but if you want to keep the crib smart and clean for future additions to your family it comes to the fore.

Tip 7.

Does the crib have a cover to keep baby in and bugs and mosquitoes out? These are normally in the form of a mesh zip door, and are brilliant as the crib can also be used at times as a playpen, and your hotel room will not be littered with ejected soft toys.

Whale's Tale Crib Bedding by Lambs & Ivy - A Product Review

Lambs & Ivy is a well-recognized and respected designer and manufacturer of baby crib bedding and accessories, available at national chains and baby specialty stores throughout the United States and at a wide assortment of internet retailers. Whale's Tale crib bedding, first introduced to consumers in early 2005, presents an interesting alternative to those who are seeking a sea life theme for their nursery décor, a surprisingly under populated theme based upon my research of competing products offered by major manufacturers. Whales Tale appears to strike a reasonable balance between quality and price, representing a good value at between $165 and $200 for a six-piece crib set.

Whale's Tale is sold as a six-piece crib set including a quilt, bumper, fitted sheet, crib skirt, valance, and diaper stacker. The fitted sheet and valance are also available for separate purchase. The Whale's Tale collection is made from 100% cotton and is machine washable - a very practical advantage. The typical assortment of coordinating accessories are available to fill out the nursery: musical mobile, wall border, wall decorations, pillows, blankets, lamp and shade, hamper, and rug. An interesting accessory, not available with many other crib bedding collections, is a child sized upholstered rocking chair, a nice touch to make an older sibling feel a part of the new nursery.

The Whale's Tale collection features soft velour whales on the quilt, bumper, and other accessories. There are also appliquéd fish, seahorses, and octopi swimming throughout the collection. The "ocean" is made from a printed light blue striped fabric and blue terrycloth. Printed fabrics are of a lesser quality than woven fabrics, however I think that the addition of the terrycloth adds a unique aspect to the collection. Moreover, the Ocean/Sea Life theme used in Whale's Tale is relatively uncommon in the crib bedding industry.

The bumper stands 9" tall with ties on the top and bottom. A slight drawback of the bumper is the fact that it comes as one continuous piece, as opposed to being broken up into two, three, or even four pieces. The crib skirt has a 13" drop to complete the look of the set. The fitted sheet is a light purple/lavender color with the sea animals printed onto the sheet. Due to the fact that the sheet is a printed fabric, I would caution a buyer to be aware that the pattern could fade or wear more quickly than would be the case with a higher quality woven fabric; I would recommend that consumers purchase separate solid colored sheets for every day use (white or pale blue should work just fine), and reserve the Whale's Tale sheet for when you want to show off your nursery to visitors. The valance measures 14" by 70" and comes in the rod style. The diaper stacker can hold up to three dozen diapers.

Because Whale's Tale merchandise is assembled in the United States, it can be particularly appealing for Canadian customers purchasing from a US retailer. It can be shipped to Canada duty-free, thereby avoiding charges of 17% or more of the purchase price that apply to bedding manufactured in China or India.

My research indicates that alternatives in the Ocean/Sea Life theme category are limited when it comes to the major national brands. You might be interested in Lilly by Glenna Jean, which is significantly pricier, or a number of patterns offered by California Kids, which are also higher priced. As it frequently happens, if Whale's Tale is successful with consumers, other manufacturers will quickly come out with new collections to fill out the category.

Treating and Preventing Drool Rash When Baby is Teething

Drool rash is very common when babies go through the teething process. The excess saliva that babies normally have while they teethe can irritate their sensitive skin and cause a red rash around their mouth. It can sometimes appear on their cheeks, neck and chest as well.

While drool rash doesn't usually bother baby, it's still a good idea to keep it under control as much as possible. Every baby is different and not all methods will work for everyone, but here are 5 ways that should help minimize drool rash, if not get rid of it completely:

Keep baby's face as dry from drool as possible. Gently pat their face with a soft dry cloth throughout the day. Laundry detergent can also be an irritant for baby's skin so you may want to wash all of baby's clothing, sheets and washcloths with natural, fragrance-free detergent.

Have a towel or cloth under their bed sheet to soak up any drool while baby sleeps. Their faces rub against the wet sheet which can exacerbate the rash.

Applying a bit of petroleum jelly can help soothe a rash if it seems like it's bothering your baby. This will help keep their skin moist and should help control any itching.

Keeping baby's clothes dry throughout the day will help keep their from rash being irritated any further. You can have baby wear a bib and replace it with a fresh one every few hours. This is also handy for preventing stains due to spit up.

If your baby's drool rash persists and is becoming bothersome, you may want to talk to your pediatrician or pharmacist and ask them to recommend a cream. Keep in mind however that this may irritate the rash even further, so use this only as a last resort.

Should I Give My Baby Fresh Fruit Juice?

Your little one is just getting onto puree food and you want to give them the best start in life. You want to ensure they get all the vitamins and minerals and that it is fresh with no nasty added ingredients. So juicing fruits and giving it to them is a good idea you might think. Wrong!

You might be surprised but babies under 6 months don't need the nutrition that fruit juice provides. Your baby is already receiving vitamin c through the foods you are feeding him already and if you are breast feeding him or her then be aware that breast milk contains vitamin C.

Fruit juice is far too concentrated for a baby. It is high in natural sugars (fructose), this can lead to your baby developing diarrhea, it should also be noted that feeding sweet fruit juice to a baby at such a young age can lead to a preference to sweet tasting foods. Which is not a good start for any baby.

Babies will get all the nourishment, vitamins and minerals from a well balanced and advised diet. Always check with your doctor before taking any form of advice concerning what foods to feed your baby. Also never take the advice off the Internet, you never know where the information was sourced.

Returning to juice if you do decide at some point to start feeding your baby juice, firstly as mentioned above, check with your doctor. If he agrees (I doubt he will) then dilute it. Undiluted juice has a cleansing affect on adults and in large quantities can have an adverse affect. Where a baby is concerned you really don't want to risk it's health and any adverse affects will be far more serious than suffered by an adult.

However why not go ahead and juice for yourself, babies can run you down, what with sleepless nights and basically being on call 24hrs a day. Supplying your body with freshly squeezed juice and veg is a great way to help keep your energy and mood up. It's great for adults, just not so great for babies.

Get Yourself the Proper Baby Crib Bedding

A great way to get inspired while designing a baby's room is to start with baby crib bedding sets. You do have to be careful, though, when looking at baby crib bedding sets. Find a set that will be safe and not put your baby in harm's way. Experts say that less is more when it comes to bedding sets. You can use all sorts of cute baby sets in a playpen or an infant carrier but the set used where the baby sleeps needs to be as minimal as possible to keep your baby safe.

Infants are at high risk for suffocation because they are so helpless. There are many things that used to be part of baby crib bedding sets that are no longer recommended.

The best sets are soft, well made and provide a comfortable place for your baby to sleep at night and to nap.

One option is the banana fish baby crib bedding set, which has four pieces: a comforter, dust ruffle, bumpers and sheets for the crib. The banana fish sets come in all sorts of themes for both boys and girls so you are sure to find your favorite baby theme. There is also the banana fish 6-piece bedding set, which includes a bumper, crib sheet, a quilt, a window valance, a dust ruffle and a diaper stacker. These baby crib bedding sets are made in the traditional favorite themes, as well as new and unique themes. Another option is the banana fish 5-piece crib set, which has a bumper, a dust ruffle that can be reversed, crib sheets and a quilt.

You also have the option of buying baby crib bedding sets in neutral colors if you are not going to find out the sex of the baby until he or she is born. Some people prefer a simple, clean look in the nursery. The crib is the most important piece of furniture so parents have to choose one carefully and make sure it will not be too big for the nursery. For small rooms, parents may want to consider a crib changer combination piece of furniture. This type of furniture provides storage space and a place for your baby to sleep all in one. You may want to keep in mind that you will have to update the nursery's theme as your baby grows.

If you want to keep the same baby crib bedding sets as your baby grows, you may want to go with clean neutral colors. You can also find some modern patterns and colors in crib sets that will make the nursery unique. Some people go with a modern look in the nursery so they are looking for colors like black and gold. You can have fun picking out sets and accessories if that is the way you want to go with the nursery. You don't have to spend a lot of money on baby crib bedding sets even, as many of these are being sold inexpensively.

Finding the Best Baby Cribs on the Market

It's a fact that babies love to sleep. That's why it's so imperative to select the right baby crib for the nursery The question is...which baby cribs are the best? The answer to that is...there are many good baby cribs that will meet your needs. You just need to know the secret to finding the perfect crib for your baby.

Tip #1: When hunting for baby cribs, don't make your selection based on beauty alone. Do your research!

There are so many cribs nowadays that offer incredible beauty, adorable finishes and interesting designs, but just because a crib is sensational that doesn't mean that it's right for your baby's nursery. It's important to do research about the manufacturer, building process, materials used and recalls.

Tip #2: Learn everything you can about the manufacturer.

If there's a crib brand that you like then start by looking online to see if you can find information about the crib manufacturer. Check to see how long they've been in business. Learn all about their crib manufacturing process. Find out what type of materials they use including: woods, glues and chemicals. If you want an eco-friendly crib then make sure that they're an eco-friendly manufacturer. You also might want to check to see if their cribs have earned a JPMA certification as proof of safety.

Tip #3: Research recalls on all baby cribs in the last several years.

You can go to CPSC.gov and look up crib recalls to see if that manufacturer has had any major recalls in the last few years. But, just because they do have cribs that were recalled doesn't rule them out completely. You'll want to look at which cribs had recalls and why. Then check to see how the manufacturer handled the recalls and make sure that the crib you're looking at isn't on any recall list.

Tip #4: Decide which features and options are most important to you in a baby crib.

Once you decide on the particular brand of crib you want then it's time to pick out important features and options. Write a list of things you definitely want in your baby crib. If you want a bottom drawer on wheels, put that on your list. If you want an attachable changing station, put that down. Then check to see what features and options are available on the baby cribs you like. This will help you narrow down your choices to just a few or just one crib.

Tip #5: Measure your baby's nursery.

Once you know that the crib is a quality baby bed and made by a reputable company, it's time to measure, measure, measure. Measure the nursery and then check the baby crib's dimensions to make sure it will fit. Also decide what other furnishings you need and make sure you can fit those into the space with the crib in the room. There are mini cribs, standard cribs and convertible cribs which all come in different sizes, so make sure to get one that's just right for your baby's space.

Tip #6: Once you've done the research, picked the options and measured the space it's time to place your order.

Getting a complete nursery set is always a smart choice. Getting a set eliminates the chance of furnishings not matching in color and style. It might say that the crib is cherry and you might find a cherry changing table somewhere else, but the two cherry finishes could be different, making the pair look awkward in the room. If you get a full set you know you're getting furnishings that all offer the same quality, color and style that will make decorating the nursery a cinch.

Natural Bedding - Now I Lay My Baby Down to Sleep

As parents, should we be concerned when we lay our baby/child into their cribs and/or beds? They're just there to rest and sleep, right? We understand this quality time is for their restoration, health, and growth. The last thing we want to find out is the air they will be breathing and the bedding and mattress they are sleeping on might be harmful to them.

The respiratory rate (breath in and out) of an adult is 15-20 times/min. When we look at pediatric respiratory rates, they are as follows; a preschooler (3-6 years) breathes 22-34 times/min, a toddler (1-3 years) breathes 24-40 times/min, and an infant (birth-1 year) breathes 30-60 times/min. Simply stated, a toddler, while resting or sleeping in their bed will breathe in and out, 15,360 times a day, just during the time they are in bed! This figure would be even higher for an infant. As parents, what our children breathe is of great importance to us.

In 2006, regarding fire regulations and fire retardants, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued and updated their rules for mattress manufacturing. This was the first update since the creation of the Rules in the 1970s. The CPSC Rules (16 CFR Part 1633) states that mattresses must be fire retardant. Mind you, this is a good thing, in and of itself, problem is, that in the manufacturing process, chemicals are commonly used to accomplish this purpose. In doing so, a potential health hazard for our children is created. This article deals with the problems chemicals pose and offers a better and more natural bedding solution.

THE PROBLEM
Although these flame retardants pose great risks to human health, there are no current regulations in place requiring a manufacturer to inform the consumer about the flame retardants they use. Due to patents and such, the majority of bed manufacturers will not disclose the chemicals used in their fire retardant process, for fear of divulging their proprietary secrets and rights. As consumers, we have the right to not buy a mattress if full disclosure of its contents has not been given. As a parent, it is your right to know about everything your baby/child is breathing when they are resting or sleeping.

While it is generally accepted that fire retardant rules and regulations are good intentioned, it is parents who are ultimately responsible for the cumulative effects from any and all chemicals that might reach our children. As a consumer of children's goods, everywhere you turn, "the buck gets passed to you". This comes in the form of claims stating; "insufficient data to evaluate this product", or "at this level and at this exposure, this.... poses no immediate health threat to human life". As parents, the buck stops with us, as we are the first and last lines of defense. As parents, we are responsible for the cumulative effect of everything in the lives of our children.

We are told, over and over again, that exposure to, contact with, or breathing small amounts of various chemicals pose no imminent health risks. But, as parents, we are keenly aware that it is the cumulative effect we are really concerned about, not the single exposure or contact with questionable chemicals or agents.

The Federal Registry publication of the Final Rules (16 CFR Part 1633), reads as follows; "The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) & the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will continue to evaluate the potential effects of fire retardant treatments to ensure they do not present a hazard to consumers, workers, or the environment." What we have here is a situation where the long term effects of the chemicals used in fire retardants are not fully known. At best, the rules/regulations concerning bedding are an ongoing work in progress. Only time will tell what the eventual outcome will be. As consumers, we need to be aware of all that is in our children's environment and world.

THE NATURAL SOLUTION: WOOL BEDDING
One of the very sound things a parent or consumer can do would be to completely bypass the entire issue of fire retardant chemicals by purchasing a natural bedding mattress with thick outer layers of wool. By its very nature, wool is fire retardant. A mattress wrapped in wool satisfactorily passes every fire test available and this is accomplished without the use of chemicals. By meeting the Federal CPSC Rules (16 CFR Part 1633); a mattress wrapped in wool complies with the Federal fire retardant rules/regulations and is a natural bedding product.

Wool is a sustainable raw material (sheep only get a haircut), not harmful to the environment, and is actually healthy for the body. Furthermore, wool is naturally dust mite free, resists molds, and is naturally hypo-allergenic. On the other hand, commercially made mattresses are also fire retardant, but become so by using harmful chemicals. Unintentionally, the chemicals contribute to the cumulative effect of one's exposure and potentially harmful diseases.

A mattress manufacturer may have the right to not disclose their proprietary manufacturing secrets, but ultimately, a parent has the right to know what is in the products they will buy for their children. In the final analysis, you have the right to choose chemical free natural bedding for your child.

If your child has allergies, asthma, and/or chemical sensitivities, you might want to consider the choice of an organic mattress, wool pillow, or a wool comforter. When it comes to natural bedding, wool has many forms. Consider all of your options.

When Should I Purchase a Crib Bedding Set and Which One Should I Buy?

Depending on the crib bedding set you would like to purchase, it can take up to 12 weeks from the date you place your order to receive it. To ensure that you receive your baby bedding before your little one arrives, it is a good idea to place your order as soon as you have decided on a theme or color scheme for your nursery and know your baby's sex (if you plan to purchase a gender specific set).

If your baby is due in less than 12 weeks, consider purchasing a crib bedding set from a retailer that has the bedding in stock. Crib bedding manufacturers like Trend Lab, JoJo Designs, and Brandee Danielle have a large selection of baby bedding in stock and available for immediately delivery. So if you need your set now, one way to get it fast is to find a retailer that carries Trend Lab, JoJo Designs, or Brandee Danielle.

When you are searching for crib bedding, consider purchasing a set that comes with multiple accessories. Although most baby bedding comes as a 4 piece set, there are sets that come as 9 pieces. For example, all of JoJo Designs crib bedding sets are 9 pieces. Each 9 piece set comes with a crib blanket, fitted crib sheet, crib bumper pads, crib skirt (dust ruffle), diaper stacker, toy bag, decorative pillow, and two window valances. Buying your baby's bedding as part of a larger set can save you a lot of money and add a designer's touch to your baby's nursery.

When purchasing a crib bedding set, you should also consider whether you are planning on having a second child. If so, it may make sense to purchase a gender neutral set that can be used for a baby boy or a baby girl. In recent years, most of the major crib bedding manufacturers have started using more gender neutral fabrics, with yellows and greens, and black and white.

When Should You Move Baby to a Crib

When should you move your baby from his baby bassinet or co-sleeper to a crib?

First, if your infant is comfortable in a crib, then make the switch right away, so said an article I read. Some babies may enjoy this type of sleeping right from the start, rather than sleeping in a cozy baby bassinet. There is no need to wait for age or size to determine the move since a crib is designed for small infants up to toddler-age children.

However, if your baby seems to be snoozing fine without a crib, then the following are a few things to keep in mind when making the change. Most babies outgrow bassinets at 3 months of age. So, if your baby is reaching this age, it's time to make the transition to a crib.

Once your baby can move around and/or sit up, a bassinet is too small and dangerous for him. An infant has no concept of gravity and does not yet possess the skill to hold himself up with falling out of a bassinet, which is not constructed for mobile infants.

Do not put pillows and stuffed animals in a crib to fill it out since these items are SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) risks. Infants have been known to suffocate to death in soft pillows and toys.

To make the transition from a baby bassinet to crib a smoother one, get your child used to being in a large crib. Perhaps let him play in his crib for a while during the day. The article recommends letting him watch you tidy up from his crib.

I let my daughter get used to her crib by putting her in it a few minutes and having her mobile entertain her. I eventually put my daughter down to nap in her crib before she started sleeping in her crib in her own room at night. Then when she was ready, she slept in her crib through the night with no problems.

Baby Crib Mattress - Drifting Off To Dreamland On A Carefully Selected Mattress

A baby crib mattress may well be a more important purchase than the crib itself. Your little one will need a durable, firm, and safe surface for a snug sleeptime routine. An expensive crib is of little use, unless take care when choosing the baby crib mattress.

Sizing of baby crib mattresses are fairly standard, but take the necessary measurements along to ensure a snug fit in the crib. It is vital to make sure that the mattress is firm. If there is too much give, it can present a safety hazard.

Most manufacturers of baby crib mattresses offer you a choice of foam, or coil products. A foam mattress is light, yet firm. Changing the sheets are often easier with a lighter mattress. A coil mattress can be more durable, and will continue to provide a firm surface for a growing child. Your budget, and personal taste will be the determining factors in your choice.

Look for a cover that is waterproof, and meets Federal Flammability Standards. An anti-microbial layer is vital

The Da Vinci Emily 2 250 Coil baby crib mattress, with its 25 year warranty, offers versatility. Your baby will be truly comfortable on this mattress, which features a reinforced triple layer, anti-microbial, non-toxic, water-resistant cover. Turn the mattress over, and it is suitable for a toddler.

The unique internal Fire Barrier meets Federal Flammability Standards. These mattresses are also available in a twin size. Cleaning involves nothing more than wiping the baby crib mattress down with a damp sponge. This superb product comes with a lifetime warranty.

Also available is the Starlight Support Supreme Innerspring with Visco baby crib mattress. The viscoelastic foam is perfect for support, and ensures correct spine alignment. This mattress also offers just the right firmness for tiny babies, to thriving toddlers.

Does Your Baby Really Need a Crib?

This is an article on the usefulness and practicality of a baby crib. This is a "thinking outside the box" type of article, challenging the normal thought on baby cribs. Most people expect that when a baby is born, they need a crib and that is that. There are; however, some caveats to cribs and their usefulness/practicality. In this article, I will go over some of the ultimate pros and cons, the dangers of baby cribs (believe it or not there are dangers), and some other options outside of a crib for a baby.

The Pros:

There are some obvious pros to a baby crib of course. It is a standalone bed for your baby to have in its first 2-3 years of infancy. A baby crib is meant to nurture a baby and keep it comfortable/safe while sleeping. A crib generally doesn't have to cost too much money and is usually relatively easy to set up.The general Idea behind a crib is to have a safe place for an infant to sleep. Most all cribs have bars that keep toddlers from moving around too much and/or falling off the bed.

Most cribs nowadays are built to very strict standards. Most cribs are also built to withstand the weight of any toddler and are very sturdy. Most mattresses are also very comfortable and a lot of babies have no trouble sleeping on these mattresses.

The Cons:

Over the years, there have been some very bad crib producers. Some cribs have caused death and others have cause strangulation/suffocation resulting in permanent brain damage. Just look at all of the stories out there about toddlers suffering from the "safety" bars falling on them and suffocating them.

There are also some issues with mattresses. Some soft mattresses have been linked to SIDS. This is a very severe problem and this is a very hard thing to grasp. Most people recommend buying harder mattresses for a new baby; however, harder mattresses could mean more discomfort to a new baby, thus resultingin in poor sleep and crying fits.

Some alternatives:

There are some alternatives to cribs and many people advocate them. The baby co-sleeper is a great alternative to a baby crib. A co-sleeper allows the parents to have the baby in the bed safe with them every night. Of course, when a baby gets larger, you would have to buy a bed eventually; however, a co-sleeper will help avoid any worries of SIDS or suffocation froma crib.

Some parents actually believe in just having the baby sleep in the bed without a co-sleeper. I generally would not recommend this; whose to say you wont rollover on to your baby at night? This is; however, a pretty popular option for most people.

Overall Conclusion:

Most people don't think about whether or not they need a baby crib. Most people just assume that a baby crib is a part of their lives and that they need one in order to have a healthy baby. If you weigh the options, you may actually find that a baby crib doesn't necessarily support your lifestyle or habits.

In my humble opinion, I feel that a baby crib is a very important part of a baby's life. It is there to comfort, and in some cases entertain a baby throughout its first few years. As a new parent, you must make sure that what you are buying is something of very high quality. Do your homework and look at reviews before you make your baby crib purchase, it is a very important decision.

Baby Crib Woodworking Plans - Heirloom in the Making

Made With Your Two Hands
Building a crib from baby crib woodworking plans should be a wondrous feeling. Beholding a thing of beauty you've just built with your own two hands for the new tyke is a joyous experience that can not be conveyed in mere words alone.

A hand made crib will be a prized heirloom that will be passed down from generation to generation if constructed properly. This is where baby crib woodworking plans have their place.

Start With A Plan
The procedure for construction of a newborn bed begins along with baby crib woodworking plans . Once deciding on the best drawings, bear in mind your level of woodworking skills. Are you a novice or advanced woodworker, or somewhere in between.

With a good set of drawings, it really doesn't matter. If your skill level is on the beginner woodworker level, then it will just take you a bit longer than someone more advanced.

How Much Time Do You Have?
Think of how long you have before the newborns bed needs to be ready, try not to get baby crib woodworking plans that are too complicated for your skill level and your time frame.

When deciding on a specific set of baby crib building plans, be sure to check that they are detailed enough and come with drawings, photos, material list and do contain specific steps all through out the building process. If at all possible, try and find drawings that contain exploded views of the procedures and steps in the project.

Bigger Is Better - Your Work Area
You will also want to ensure that you have an area large enough to complete the project. It will come in handy if you can lay out the parts of the project all in the same area, this will help you in "eyeing" up the project as you go.

Material Selection Is Crucial
This project will probably end up being a generational heirloom, so don't skimp on materials, get the best wood you can afford, this would be a type of hardwood.

Soft woods just will not last over the years like a hardwood will such as Oak. Finish will also be very important for durability and non-toxicity. Remember, this IS a newborns bed. The best advice for this is to talk to your local lumber yard clerk and explain what you're building and your concerns for a proper finish for your tykes bed.

Be sure and allow yourself enough time before you will need the bed, the finish itself will take some time to cure before the big day...there may also be some finish suggestions in your baby crib woodworking plans

Safe Baby Crib Bedding and Accessories

When it comes to decorating your baby's nursery there certainly are a lot of possibilities. You can choose from a variety of themes to suit your tastes or aspirations you have for your child. Or, you can keep things simple and low-key. However, when it comes to your baby's crib it's always best to keep things as simple and safe as possible.

In order to take every precaution necessary against the threat of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) the only things that should be in the crib besides your baby is a firm mattress with a tight fitting pad and sheet. You can add a decorative crib skirt or dust ruffle but avoid using puffy or padded bumper guards. If you need to use bumper pads only use those that are thin, firm, securely tied, and meshy. Bumpers should fit around the entire perimeter of the crib and tie or snap in at least six different locations. Make sure that bumper ties are no longer than 7 inches long.

When it comes to crib mattresses, federal regulations recommended measurements of 27 1/4 inches by 51 5/8 inches. The mattress should also not be more than six inches thick. If the crib mattress is too soft there is a danger that it will conform to your baby's shape and cause suffocation or SIDS. Also, if the mattress is too small, gaps in the crib could become danger zones for your baby. Both foam and innerspring mattresses are good choices as long as they meet the above criteria. Remember, don't add anything soft or plushy to your baby's crib including pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, or positioning devices. These all increase the risk of suffocation and SIDS.

Fitted sheets come in all types of fabrics, colors and styles to suit your tastes. You can consider coordinating the sheets with your window treatments or paint color. Prices for crib sheets vary depending on where you buy them. One company even specializes in designing crib sheets that have a removable top panel that zips onto the base of the sheet with a single, safety covered zipper. This makes changing the sheets much easier. All you have to do is clean the top sheet panel and leave the rest for later if your baby has a leaky diaper in the middle of the night.
